That question caught Hadley completely off guard.
“Don’t rush your answer!” Megan’s grip on Hadley’s hand tightened, her tone growing sharper.
“I’m asking if even a tiny part of you still hopes to fix things with him. Please be honest. This really matters to me.”
Hadley wasn’t clueless. She had already started piecing together what might be going on between Megan and Eric.
Without speaking right away, she gave a slow shake of her head and said, “No.” She paused, then added, “We ended things before his surgery ever happened.”
“I already knew that,” Megan said, nodding along.
“You were leaving Srixby when I arrived. I ran into Eric at the airport. I knew he chased you all the way to Velacca. And then it happened while he was there…”
“Yeah.” Hadley gave a slight nod.
“That’s how everything happened.”
“Hadley!” Megan clutched her hand tighter, her grip trembling with urgency.
“If you’re not planning to give him another chance… is it alright if I do?”
That question caught Hadley by surprise. She let out a gentle laugh and replied, “You don’t need to ask me that. You’re free to make your own decisions.”
“I’m serious about him!” Megan’s eyes began to well up.
“All those years you spent loving him? I felt the same way. My feelings were just as deep as yours.”
Hadley did not argue. She had sensed this long ago.
“I want to be the one beside him now!” Megan’s voice cracked as she searched Hadley’s face.
“Will you let me have that chance?”
Hadley blinked. She couldn’t understand why Megan felt the need to ask. While she didn’t think it was her place to allow or deny it, she met Megan’s gaze and, after a moment, gave a quiet nod.
“Yes.”

“Thank you!” Megan’s happiness poured out as her eyes shimmered with tears.
“Thank you so much, Hadley!”
“You don’t have to thank me.” Hadley shook her head slowly, feeling unworthy.
“This is your moment to build something real with him.”
“Exactly!” Megan gave an eager nod.
“I won’t waste this chance!”
Her gaze shifted back to Hadley, and despite the tears, there was a sharp glint in her eyes.
“Can you promise not to see him anymore?”
That request left Hadley speechless.
“I understand it’s difficult,” Megan continued gently.
“Your ties to the Flynn family make it nearly impossible to avoid him completely. But even if you see him again… could you pretend he’s not there? Don’t speak to him. Don’t get too close. You two share years of history… and I’m simply scared he might start feeling something for you again.”
With trembling hands, Megan tapped her chest and whispered, “I’m giving this everything I have… I really am.”
Her voice shook as the weight of her feelings pressed forward.
