Chapter 1956: Chapter 1957

The doctor’s words left Megan reeling, her heart sinking. Was Eric’s condition really that severe?

The examination room door swung open again, and Eric emerged, casually adjusting his sleeves as he walked.

“Eric!” Megan hurried toward him, her words tumbling out. “Why are you refusing the surgery?”

Eric froze, his hand pausing mid-motion on his cuff. “That’s my concern, not yours.”

“Answer me!” Megan ignored his cold tone, pointing at the doctor. “He said you need surgery immediately. Why won’t you do it?”

“I told you…” Eric’s eyes narrowed, his voice sharp. “This doesn’t concern you.”

“How can it not concern me?” Megan’s brow furrowed as she shook her head. “Of course it does! I care about you! I would be heartbroken if something happened to you!”

Her eyes brimmed with tears again, her voice quivering. “I’ve loved you since I was little. I can’t bear the thought of losing you…” She reached out, gently tugging at his sleeve.

“Is that so?” Eric’s lips curled into a faint, mocking smile. “That’s your problem. Whether you’re upset or not means nothing to me. Do you think I care?” He jerked his arm free, brushing past her as he walked away.

Megan stood rooted to the spot, her chest tightening with a sharp pang. Her lashes trembled as she whispered through a sob, “He’s so… heartless, so cruel!” Even if he didn’t feel the same, did he have to be so harsh? He knew how much she loved him.

“Hmph!” She wiped a tear from her eye, lips pursed in defiance. “Do you think I’ll give up? No way. I love you, and I won’t stop loving you!”

When the car came to a stop, Hadley jolted awake. A clammy layer of sweat clung to her back, soaking her clothes uncomfortably. She had been dreaming. In her dream, she was trapped under rubble with Eric. But unlike reality, he had been left behind this time.

She awoke in a panic, her heart racing. For a moment, she was disoriented, unsure if this was still the dream or reality.

“Hadley?” Zane, seated beside her, noticed her distress and frowned with concern. “What’s wrong? Are you uncomfortable? Is your body still numb?”

From the front seat, Tamara turned, echoing his worry. “Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I’m okay.” Hadley snapped back to reality, nodding slowly. “Don’t worry.” Tamara and Zane were here. This was real.

The incident in Tidebourne had cut their training program short, and now they were driving back to Srixby.

“Try to rest more.” Zane handed her a water bottle. “We’ve still got over an hour until Srixby.”

“Thanks.”

Hadley took the bottle, took a couple of sips, and leaned against the car seat. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was the new phone Tamara had bought for her in Tidebourne, still linked to her old number.

“Hello?”
