“Wait—you know our CEO?” Elissa’s eyes narrowed slightly. That detail stood out. A realization began to form in her mind. Was it possible…? “So when I got hired… that was because of you?”
“It’s true.”
There was no hesitation in Ernest’s answer.
Initially, he hadn’t intended to bring it up, but if this helped Elissa see just how much he had cared all along, then he didn’t regret saying it.
“I reached out on your behalf. I thought it might open a door for you.” For a while, Elissa said nothing.
Everything made sense now.
She had always wondered. Landing a position at such a top-tier design firm without much effort? It had felt too easy.
Eyes fixed on Ernest, she stared—speechless. So he had been silently watching over her this whole time.
Not wanting her to get the wrong idea, Ernest said quickly, “Even though I asked for a little help getting you in, everything after that was on you. You’ve proven yourself, Elissa. Your work speaks for itself.”
“Hey, Elissa. Mr. Flynn.” Bonnie strolled over, throwing a playful wink Elissa’s way. “Mom’s getting dinner ready. Since you’re already here, Mr. Flynn, why not stay and eat with us?”
Facing Ernest now, she offered a polite smile. “It’s nothing fancy, Mr. Flynn. Just a regular home-cooked dinner. I hope that’s alright with you.”
With a brief look at Elissa, Ernest gave a nod. “Not a problem. Elissa’s family feels like mine, too.”
“You really mean that?” Bonnie’s face lit up with delight. “Perfect! I’ll let Mom know to prepare a few more dishes. By the way, Mr. Flynn, do you have any favorite foods?”
Ernest smiled slightly. “If Elissa likes it, I’m sure I will too. Thanks.” Bonnie’s expression faltered briefly. “Uh… alright then. I’ll leave you two to catch up.”

Without meaning to, Elissa furrowed her brows. Was she overthinking it, or had Bonnie been a little too warm toward Ernest?
She turned toward Ernest with a questioning look. “Why did you agree to stay?”
“I could’ve just walked away,” Ernest said. “But if I bailed now, your grandfather might start worrying. Let’s not make him uneasy. Come on, let’s go.”
“Go where?” Elissa stared at him, puzzled.
“Take me to your room.” Ernest’s eyes swept the hallway. “You did grow up here, didn’t you? You must’ve had your own space in this house.”
“Yeah.” Elissa gave a nod and gestured toward the staircase. “Second floor, second door to the left.”
A gentle smile formed on her lips. “My room’s still the same. Grandpa never let it change. Even now, he makes sure it stays clean.”
“That’s really special.” Ernest reached over and gently tousled her hair. “You’ve never been alone, Elissa. No matter what happens, your grandfather’s love will always be there.”
Although Elissa’s eyes brimmed with emotion, she tilted her head slightly and offered a quiet smile. “I know.”
