Watching the scene unfold, Becker and Louisa quietly clammed up, unsure of what to say.
A low chuckle escaped Addy. “No need to bother Mrs. Flynn,” he said with a knowing smile. “I believe you.”
Soon after, Becker and Louisa—clearly feeling out of place—muttered a quick excuse and slipped out of the room.
Just then, Ernest’s phone began to ring. The screen showed Quentin’s name. Glancing at Elissa, he spoke calmly, “I’ll take this outside for a minute.”
“Alright.”
The moment the door clicked shut, Addy reached over and took Elissa’s hand, concern written all over his face. “Tell me something, Elissa… does he treat you right?”
“Grandpa…” Elissa could already tell what was weighing on his mind. “He’s been treating me well so far.”
Even so, her own emotions were still a tangled mess, and finding the right words to explain everything to her grandfather felt nearly impossible.
Unsure of how to frame it all, she finally said, “As for where this is going… I’m not sure yet.”
“I understand.”
Addy didn’t need a full explanation. He already knew Elissa’s history and the weight she carried because of it.
With a gentle squeeze, he held her hand and offered a quiet sense of comfort. “No matter how it turns out, don’t ever feel like you have to endure it alone. You can always come to me. I meant it when I said I’d look after you.”
Elissa nodded, a smile blooming through the uncertainty. “Okay!”
They left the hospital.

Without saying a thing, Elissa slipped into the back seat. Ernest climbed in beside her, then pressed his fingers to his brow before speaking. “I probably crossed a line back there… but I couldn’t just sit there while your father spoke to you like that.”
That caught Elissa off guard. He must’ve heard everything from earlier, and that was why he decided to stand up for her.
“You don’t have to worry about it.” A faint breath escaped Ernest as he spoke. “I know you’re still unsure about me. And I won’t push you. However…” His tone softened. “I’m willing to wait, Elissa. Someday, I hope you’ll believe that my feelings go beyond you being Locke’s mom.”
A faint quiver stirred in Elissa’s chest. She remained motionless, her thoughts tangled and distant.
It took a while before she blinked back to the present and looked out the window. “Wait… where are we headed?”
Something felt off. This route wasn’t leading to Lion Bay.
“Eric invited us out for dinner,” Ernest replied casually. “Chances are we won’t be getting back to Lion Bay tonight.”
“Mr. Scott?” Elissa’s confusion deepened. “You mean I’m included in that invite?”
“Exactly.” Ernest gave a small nod. “That’s what he said—he wants both of us there.”
