His voice was unnervingly calm, deceptively conversational, but the intensity behind each word resonated unmistakably in the confined space.
Elissa remained frozen, completely bewildered by his accusation. She shook her head vehemently in protest. “That’s not what I’m thinking…”
“No?” Ernest’s lips curled into a sardonic smile, his breath growing more pronounced. “Then perhaps you can explain your recent actions—buying medicine for him, worrying about his well-being, accompanying him so intimately in his vehicle?”
The realization hit her like a slap—he knew everything!
He hadn’t left as she had assumed; he had followed her every move during the entire encounter.
Indignation flared in Elissa’s chest, setting her nerves alight. She met his gaze with a scathing look. “You followed me? What right do you have to do that?”
“Elissa!” Ernest’s composure cracked, his patience visibly slipping away. “Have you already forgotten his transgressions? And now you’re thinking about rekindling a relationship with that despicable man?”
Elissa struggled for breath, her chest tightening. Words rose but got stuck in her throat. The truth struck her hard—why should she owe him any explanation? Ernest meant nothing to her anymore.
She steeled herself, raising her chin defiantly. “That’s none of your concern! Mr. Flynn, there is nothing between us. You have no right to pass judgment or meddle in my life and decisions!” Her fingers clenched tightly around the car door handle. “If you’re done with your speech, I’m leaving.”
“Elissa!” Ernest’s voice became more forceful as he seized her wrist with surprising strength. His gaze turned into something dark and intense, each word he spoke laced with a dangerous edge. “Don’t see Robin again. I won’t allow it.”
“What did you say?” Elissa blinked, unsure if her ears had betrayed her. The words were so outrageous, they didn’t feel real.
“I said…” Ernest’s gaze hardened as he made sure to pronounce each word slowly, “You’re not to see Robin again.”

A laugh of disbelief escaped Elissa, sharp and full of indignation. “Let go!” She jerked her hand out of Ernest’s grasp, meeting his stare head-on, her voice brimming with defiance. “Listen carefully—I’m going to see him again. I absolutely will!”
With her declaration hanging in the air, Elissa pivoted sharply, thrust the car door open, and extricated herself from Ernest’s presence.
“Elissa!”
She refused to acknowledge his call, leaving him to stew in his own fury and frustration. The door slammed shut behind her, the finality of the sound accentuating her departure. Ernest, consumed by rage, delivered a powerful kick to the vehicle’s side panel. He had tried to reason with her, but she remained stubbornly deaf to him!
