Upon realizing the woman was Ellis’ mother, everything became clear, especially her excessive warmth and the pointed remarks. So Ellis hadn’t been lying. His mother was indeed open-minded. Whether July’s sudden appearance had been deliberate or not, Hadley couldn’t be bothered to care.

She felt no need to explain herself to Ellis either. First, she had rejected him outright. Second, her mind was consumed with finding Eric and ensuring his safety. Anything else wasn’t worth mentioning.

Hadley offered a faint smile.

“Yes!” Megan answered, her eyes bloodshot from crying.

“What’s the situation now? How can I help?”

“The police investigation is underway.” Hadley’s brows knitted tightly.

“We’ve done everything we can. Now, all we can do is wait.”

Megan gave a vacant nod.

Moments later, her hand clutched Hadley’s more tightly.

“Hadley… I…”

She faltered over her words.

“I don’t want to interfere between you two… I just, I just—”

Her tone grew desperate.

“If… if they find him, if there’s any word at all… I need to know.”

Her throat tightened.

“Just promise me you’ll tell me he’s alive… will you?”

Hadley stood still, unable to answer right away.
