Not long after, a message arrived with the meeting details.
That evening, Hadley set out for the meeting.
The venue was Red Shell Bistro, where Ellis had reserved a private room.
A server guided her to the door and gave it a soft knock.
It opened from within—Ellis greeted her with a warm smile.
“You’re here. Please, come in.”
“Thank you,” Hadley said politely, taking the seat he pulled out for her.
“Can I get you something to drink?” he offered, extending the menu.
“No, I’m fine.” She shook her head, keeping her bag on her lap—ready to leave at any moment.
“I just have a few things to say, and then I’ll be on my way.”
Ellis froze for a second before giving a small nod.
“Alright.”
Without delay, he reached for the pitcher on the table, poured water into a glass, and set it down in front of Hadley.
“It’s warm,” he muttered.
“Just how you like it.”
The gesture caught Hadley off guard. Ellis actually remembered what she liked?
“Thanks.” Hadley lifted the glass carefully, sipped the water, and kept it cradled in her palms. A faint smile touched her lips as she spoke in a low tone.
“Mr. Gomez, I owe you an apology…”
Ellis gave another nod, his face steady.
“I had a feeling.”
“Mr. Gomez,” Hadley said with an apologetic smile, “I appreciate your kindness. It is always flattering to be the one someone admires.”
“True.” Ellis returned the smile, brushing a hand against his forehead.

“But could you tell me why you’re refusing me?”
Hadley had already braced herself for that question.
“Mr. Gomez,” Hadley said carefully.
“We’ve only crossed paths a handful of times. Do you truly know who I am?”
“I know enough,” Ellis said as he lifted his glass and sipped the water.
“The Flynn family adopted you when your grandmother passed away, you were once married, and you have a daughter.”
“All of that?” Hadley’s eyes widened in surprise.
“If you already know, then why would you still choose to…”
Why was he intent on seeking something deeper with her, even hinting at marriage?
“Why wouldn’t I?” Ellis shrugged, palms open.
“I’m unattached, and since you’re divorced, that makes you free as well. Us being together makes perfect sense.”
The bluntness in his words stirred an old memory for Hadley. Someone had once spoken to her in almost the same way. However, that story had ended badly.
Hadley’s thoughts drifted for a moment before she let out a gentle laugh and shook her head.
“Mr. Gomez, perhaps you think it’s that simple, but your family, especially your parents, will likely never agree.”
“I see.” Ellis leaned back slightly as the realization hit him.
