Suddenly, a figure dashed into the lane and blocked their path.
Phillips hit the brakes. Thankfully, they hadn’t gained much speed. If they had, someone could’ve been hurt.
Hadley leaned forward.
“What happened?”
Phillips squinted through the rain.
“It’s Megan.”
“Megan?” Hadley’s brows furrowed.
“She’s still here?”
“Eric!” Megan ran up to the back window, pounding on the glass.
“I need to talk to you!”
From outside, the windows were too tinted to see in.
“Phillips, roll it down,” said Hadley.
“Alright.”
As the window lowered, Megan’s face changed the instant she saw who was inside. Her expression froze, and she looked as if she’d swallowed her tongue.
“You…” she stammered.
“It’s you?”
“Yes,” Hadley replied calmly.
She noticed Megan was drenched.
“You didn’t bring an umbrella?”
Turning to Phillips, she asked, “Is there one in the car?”
“There is,” he nodded.
“Want me to grab it?”
“Please.”

“Okay.”
Phillips started to unbuckle his seatbelt, but Megan cut in sharply.
“No need!”
Her face was streaked with rain as she stared at Hadley.
“Can I talk to you?”
Hadley hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
“Get in.”
She looked at Phillips.
“Unlock the door.”
Phillips looked uneasy.
“Hadley…”
“It’s fine,” she said.
She understood why he hesitated, but she wasn’t afraid anymore. Whatever Megan had to say, she was ready to hear it.
“Unlock it.”
“Alright.” After a brief pause, Phillips nodded and pressed the switch.
“It’s open.”
Megan climbed into the car.
Hadley turned slightly and offered her a towel.
