She turned to Joy.
“Go ahead, Joy. What do you want to say to Dad?”
In that instant, Joy hesitated and slipped behind her mother’s legs.
Hadley blinked, caught off guard.
“What’s the matter, Joy? Didn’t we agree you’d thank Daddy for the dress?”
Joy gripped her mother’s leg and stayed hidden, too shy to speak.
“Joy?”
“No worries,” said Eric quickly, waving his hand as if to reassure them.
“She doesn’t have to if she’s not ready.”
Right then, Joy peeked out from behind her mom, only half her face visible, watching Eric with wary eyes.
Hadley and Eric exchanged a glance, both feeling a twist of emotion.
“Hi there, Joy.” Keeping his distance, Eric crouched down and offered a gentle wave.
“Good evening.”
With a big smile, he gave her a thumbs-up.
“You look amazing. The prettiest little princess anyone could wish for!”
Joy glanced up at her mother, who had said something similar just moments ago. Stepping out a little more, she managed to say in a small voice, “Thank you.”
The words hit Eric like a jolt. Joy talked to him!
Eric couldn’t help but laugh softly.
“You’re very welcome.”
He gestured as he spoke.
“There’s more on the way—a whole set. It’s still being made, but as soon as it’s ready, they’ll deliver it right to you. Does that sound good?”
Joy looked to Hadley for guidance.

Hadley gently prompted her, “If you like it, nod your head. If not, just shake your head.”
“Yes.” Joy nodded at Eric, and then quickly ducked behind her mom again.
“Wonderful!” Eric’s face lit up as he nodded along.
“I’ll tell them to hurry so you can have more beautiful new dresses soon.”
“Mommy.” Joy tugged at Hadley’s skirt.
“What is it?” Hadley bent down to listen, her face close to Joy’s.
“Do you want to tell me something?”
Eric leaned in just a bit, eager to catch his daughter’s words.
“Mommy,” Joy whispered, her voice just for Hadley. She lifted her arm, pointing at her head.
“Elsa has a tiara too, but it isn’t here yet.”
Hadley’s gaze shifted instinctively to Eric.
“There is!” Eric caught the hint and nodded eagerly.
“I made sure to order one for you. It just needs a bit more time.”
He’d put in the extra effort for Joy, wanting to give her something truly special. A tiara made of real gems needed more time to finish than a princess dress.
Joy turned to her mom, eyes shining.
