But Ferris, swept away in joy, was too caught up in the moment to notice. For the first time, he felt truly acknowledged by his son.
Out of the corner of his eye, Ferris spotted Megan standing quietly nearby. His gaze shifted, and a thought sparked. He beckoned her over.
“Come here!”
“Mr. Scott.” Megan stepped forward at once.
“Eric…” With a glimmer in his eye, Ferris pointed to Megan and asked Eric, “You don’t recognize her either, do you?”
Eric frowned and shook his head, growing impatient. “Didn’t the doctor already say it? I don’t remember anything—not even myself. How would I remember her?”
“You’re right!” Ferris replied, unbothered by the cold tone. Instead, he chuckled and said casually, “Then let me remind you—Megan is your girlfriend.”
The moment he heard that, Eric snapped up. His gaze landed on Megan, startled. Something about that didn’t sit right.
Megan’s eyes widened as well. She stared at Ferris, completely taken aback. Ferris gave her a subtle, knowing glance before turning back to Eric.
“You two grew up together. You’ve been in love for over a decade. You were even planning to get married, but…” He sighed heavily, as if burdened by fate. “Then this unfortunate incident happened.”
After a pause, he added gently, “Eric, it’s fine if you can’t remember me. But don’t forget how devoted Megan’s been to you. She’s been at your bedside every single day during your time in the hospital.”
Megan opened her mouth but struggled to speak. That part, at least, was true. She had been there every day.
Eric looked at her, his brows drawing together in thought. She had indeed been the first person he saw when he woke up—and her demeanor had felt… familiar. Maybe she really was his girlfriend?
His expression darkened, and he fell silent, his mood clearly shifting.

The doctor quickly stepped in. “Mr. Scott, the patient has just regained consciousness. He needs rest. The nurses are ready to begin his treatment.”
“Oh! Of course, of course!” Ferris nodded repeatedly, eager to cooperate. “Treatment comes first.”
He glanced at Megan and said, “I’ll leave Eric in your care. Contact me if anything happens.”
“No problem.” Megan followed him out, clearly anxious to speak.
“Mr. Scott!” She caught up with him outside and lowered her voice urgently. “Why did you say I’m his girlfriend?”
In truth, the one who had grown up with Eric—the woman he had loved for over ten years—was Hadley.
Ferris raised a brow, his tone teasing. “You don’t want to be?”
Megan faltered. Of course, she wanted to be. She’d never denied it. Loving Eric had been her dream for as long as she could remember. But she still hesitated.
“Mr. Scott, didn’t you hear what the doctor said? Eric won’t be like this forever. He just woke up from surgery, and he’s confused. Eventually, he’ll remember everything. When that happens and he learns the truth…”
