“Alright.” Hadley gave a small nod. Those pills had been prescribed exactly for nights like this.
Eric stepped away and returned with the medicine and a glass of water. “Here you go. Open up for me.”
He watched as she swallowed the pill, then said, “Lie down and try to relax. Let all those worries drift away.”
“Okay.” Hadley did as he asked, settling under the covers.
He made sure she was tucked in, then lay down beside her, holding her close along with the blanket. “Want to lie on my chest? You’ll feel safer here.”
“Alright.” Hadley shifted until she was facing him, fitting herself into his arms. With her pressed close, Eric realized they couldn’t drag out this case much longer. Her health was already suffering because of it.
By the time morning arrived, Hadley’s face showed more color than it had the previous day. Noticing her improvement, Eric’s whole face lit up. He swallowed his morning medicine in one go, the bitterness barely registering as he grinned at her.
“You’re hopeless,” Hadley joked, handing him a piece of candied fruit to wash away the taste.
She glanced at him and asked, “Now that the Scott Group is in a relatively stable state, are you finally ready for your operation?”
Surgery was unavoidable, and Hadley believed waiting any longer would only make things worse.
“You’re right.” Eric nodded. “When the board meets at the end of the month, I’ll announce it, and then get in touch with the hospital.”
“That puts me at ease.” Hadley let out a small sigh of relief. Still, her heart wouldn’t settle until the operation was behind him.
She lifted a cookie and offered it to him with a smile. “Try this—it’s really great. They made it just this morning.”
“Oh, really?” Eric’s lips curled into a playful smile as he leaned forward and took a bite. “You’re right, that’s really delicious.”

At that moment, the doorbell rang. It was Cristian.
“Cristian’s here!” Hadley wiped her fingers with a napkin and went to answer the door. When Cristian appeared, she greeted him with a gentle smile. “Good morning, Cristian.”
“Good morning, Hadley.”
“There’s something important I need to discuss with you…” Hadley began eagerly.
“You’re talking about Miss Holland, aren’t you?” Cristian guessed, glancing at Eric, who stood quietly nearby. He then continued, “Mr. Scott already gave me the recording, but to be honest—”
He recounted everything he and Eric had talked about the night before, explaining it all to Hadley.
Once she finished listening, the disappointment on Hadley’s face was unmistakable. “So… it won’t do any good?”
“That’s not quite it,” Cristian explained. “The recording will help us show Linda’s true colors, but in court, it’s still not enough to secure a conviction. We still need solid evidence—a witness or something physical.”
