While talking, she shot a quick glance at Eric. By then, he had already finished the remedy and just popped a piece of candied fruit into his mouth to wash away the bitter taste.
Catching her glance, he asked, “Did something happen?”
“Yeah.” Hadley gave a small nod, setting her phone aside. “Ernest is asking if you’re available later. If you are, he wants you to come with me.” Whatever Ernest had planned, it sounded significant.
“Sure thing,” Eric responded right away. “I’ll ask Phillips to clear my calendar.”
“Alright.”
Once more, Hadley lifted her phone and called. “Ernest, Eric said he’s available… Yes, that’s fine. We’ll see you later.”
Ending the call, she set the phone down just as the housekeeper arrived with breakfast. Their meal became a pleasant mix of conversation and food.
“Ernest wants us to visit Nyla this afternoon.”
Visiting his grandmother sounded like a good idea to Eric. “We haven’t seen her in ages. I’m all for it.”
“Mm.” Hadley peeled a boiled egg, carefully removed the yolk, and offered it to Eric. Without hesitation, he ate it.
Because Hadley didn’t care for egg yolks, Eric always took them off her hands, leaving her the whites.
Once they finished breakfast, Hadley walked Eric to the door and saw him off. Later in the day, Eric returned from work, ready to take her to see Nyla.
“You actually made it.”
Upon their arrival, Ernest stood at the entrance, waiting for them.
A look was exchanged between Eric and Ernest as Ernest said, “Stay out here for a moment. Hadley, I need you to come in with me first.”

Confusion flickered in Eric’s eyes. “Wait, I’m not allowed inside?”
“No, not yet. Give us a moment.” Ernest wore that familiar, unreadable expression.
“Hadley, come along with me.” Th?s chapter is updated by find~novel~net
“Alright.” Hadley nodded, though a dozen questions swirled in her mind. She still had no idea what Ernest had in mind.
“Grandma, Hadley’s here now.”
“Good day, Nyla.”
“Hadley, come on over here.” From her wheelchair, Nyla lifted her head and welcomed them with a smile, gesturing for Hadley to come closer.
“How are you feeling, Nyla?”
“Great, now that I see you. Come and sit next to me.”
“Sure.” Hadley followed her instructions, settling into the seat and studying Nyla with curiosity. “You really seem much stronger lately.”
“That’s right.” With a pleased nod, Nyla squeezed Hadley’s hand. “These days, I’ve been doing well. I finally feel up to helping with your wedding arrangements, you know?”
“Huh?” Surprise caught Hadley off guard. Nyla already knew about the wedding?
