It took Colleen a while to find a space. Just as she spotted an open slot and pulled in, another car swerved in from the opposite side.
“Ah!”
Her car jolted. Colleen’s heart jumped. Had they just hit each other?
She parked quickly and got out to check.
“What happened?” The other driver stepped out, already shouting. “Hey! Do you even know how to drive?”
What did he just say?
Colleen stared at him, stunned—half annoyed, half amused. “Excuse me? Your car hit mine. And you’re yelling at me?”
“Nonsense!”
The man was large and aggressive. He pointed at her, barking, “I was already pulling in! You cut me off!”
“That was my spot and you cut me off!” Colleen snapped.
“Enough!” He waved a thick hand in her direction, like he was about to strike her. “Just look what you did to my car. How are you going to pay for it?”
“What?” Colleen’s eyes widened. “You’re being completely unreasonable!”
“Shut it!” The man clenched his fist and waved it at her. “You paying or not? If not, you’re not leaving this lot!”
“You—” Colleen backed up, grabbing her phone to call the police.
But he lunged forward and snatched it from her hand. “What do you think you’re doing? Trying to call the cops? Not a chance—” He didn’t get to finish. A sharp cry cut through the air.
“What?” Colleen lifted her gaze, startled.
A young man had stepped in from behind—taller by a head, lean, calm, and steady. He gripped the man’s arm with effortless control.

“Ow!” the man yelped. “Let go! You’re breaking my arm!”
Eric let out a cold snort, released him, and took Colleen’s phone from the man’s hand. He handed it back to her. “Here you go.”
Colleen quickly took the phone. “Thank you.”
Eric turned back to the man. “I saw everything. She was in the spot first. You hit her car.”
He then added, “My dashcam caught it all. So—are you going to pay for the damage or should we call the police?”
The man’s tone shifted at once. “It’s a misunderstanding! Just a misunderstanding!”
Rubbing his wrist, he backed toward his car. “I’ll be going now. Sorry for the trouble!”
“Wait! You need to pay for the damage—”
“Let it go…” Colleen stepped in, cutting Eric off gently. “Not worth the hassle.” She had no patience for people like that.
Eric gave a small nod and turned to leave.
“Hey!” Colleen called after him. “Really—thank you.”
