“What good would it have done?”

Robin let out a self-deprecating laugh. “You didn’t remember anything. And, to be honest… I wanted to forget that baby even more than you did.”

With that, Elissa felt she had asked everything she needed to know.

A waiter appeared with their meals.

“Let’s eat,” Robin said softly, setting her favorite dishes in front of her one after another.

Elissa blinked away the tears. Her voice was barely audible. “Thank you.”

Robin watched her in silence as she ate, his chest heavy with a pain he couldn’t begin to express.

They finished their meal without another word and left the cafe together.

Outside, he held up his car keys. “Where are you going? I can give you a ride.”

“Thank you, but I can manage.”

Elissa turned him down just as he had expected.

Robin had anticipated her answer. He gave a faint, bitter smile. “So now, I don’t even have the right to offer you a ride?”

“That’s not what this is,” Elissa replied with a faint smile. “I’m actually meeting Hadley. I’ll be seeing her soon.”

“Oh, I see…” Robin fell quiet, then suddenly gathered his courage. “Elissa… Is there really no chance left for me? What if I change? I mean it this time!”

His voice grew heavier as he met her gaze, his concern clear. “Does Ernest treat you well?”
