Chapter 97: Chapter 97

Harvey was both pleased and perplexed.

Finally, he asked, “Wesley, do you want to meet with Sandra?”

Wesley paused in his steps. “If you happen to see her, tell her I’ll come to pick her up later.”

Harvey was left speechless.

How could Wesley be so cold?

Upon arriving, he hadn’t even glanced at his own wife. Outsiders often said that Wesley was quite fond of her, but those observations didn’t seem to support the notion at all.

Harvey couldn’t help but reflect on Wesley’s younger years, remembering how close he had been with Holly.

His current wife was just a village girl—unsophisticated and, in his view, incapable of meaningful conversation. They seemed to have no common interests.

He was unlikely to have any real feelings for her.

Harvey exhaled deeply, realizing he might be meddling where he shouldn’t.

After Wesley left, a colleague joked, “No one is leaving tonight.”

Harvey, still clutching the documents in his hand, felt a sudden surge of resolve.

An idea formed. Hailey’s current condition might actually be fortuitous.

Otherwise, hearing such news could very well be the death of her.

Outside the police station, Wesley climbed into his car.

Joey sighed. “Maybe you should delay the shareholders’ meeting and visit Mrs. Cooper first?”

Wesley leaned back in his seat. “Take me to the company.”

Joey felt a flicker of sympathy.

Wesley might appear normal on the outside, but Joey knew that the toxin still lingered.

Sandra had mentioned that recovery would take at least eight months, perhaps even a year if the situation worsened.

Everyone assumed that once Wesley was fully recovered, he would eagerly seize control.

But the truth was that he moved cautiously—not due to an inability to claim power more aggressively, but because of the limitations imposed by his health.

Joey believed that although Wesley had not yet fallen for Sandra, there was still a sense of camaraderie between them. They were like comrades.

Wesley’s reluctance to visit Sandra didn’t stem from a lack of emotion, but from the sheer weight of his responsibilities.

“Mr. Cooper, perhaps you should take the medicine Mrs. Cooper prepared for you,” suggested Joey as he started the car, heading toward the company.

Wesley pulled a small vial of pills from his pocket—unlabeled, with tiny granules that seemed to improve his condition. He wondered if this medicine was her unique creation.

Although many doctors existed in the world, few were as skilled in both medicine and healing.

Before his incapacitation, he had heard of Kate—reputed to be capable of resurrecting the dead and mending bones, known as the “Nemesis of the Reaper.”

He had once speculated that Sandra might be Kate. Glancing once more at the vial, a faint smile tugged at his lips.

Inside the hospital, Jagger went straight to Hailey’s ward upon his arrival. However, the Cooper family’s bodyguards refused him entry.

Despite his status, the bodyguards reported his arrival.

In reality, Hailey hadn’t fainted at all—her condition was a mere ruse.

Maria handed her a cup of water. “Mom, Sandra is too formidable. We should admit defeat.”

Enraged, Hailey didn’t even try to accept the cup, instead knocking it away in anger.

Maria fell silent.

Other family members interjected, “Mom, your seal has been taken. What other options do we have?”

“Mom, I was previously detained, and Wesley didn’t lift a finger to help.”

These comments only fueled Hailey’s fury.

It was because of the misappropriations in the garment department that Baxter had been apprehended.

No matter how much she had pleaded with Wesley to secure his release, he remained indifferent.

Even her attempts to persuade Victor and Debra had been in vain. They had caused her immense disappointment.

The bodyguards informed her of Jagger’s visit.

“At first, I thought imprisoning Sandra would have no effect on Wesley,” Hailey said, her tone saturated with venom.

“It now seems that Sandra is not without the favor of the Hill.” A thought suddenly struck Maria.

“Mom, the Hill’s third son, Jagger, has come to intercede on her behalf.”

Baxter, familiar with racing due to his hedonistic lifestyle, added, “They’ve raced before. Sandra is at the prime age for racing, and she almost became famous overnight from her last competition. With the right support, the Hill could easily monopolize the sport in the future.”

“I don’t believe the Hill would allow Sandra to be imprisoned,” Hailey chuckled coldly, her eyes narrowing with cunning. “It seems that the solution has presented itself.”

Hailey then said, “Tell Jagger that I have not yet regained consciousness. As for Sandra’s fate, it will depend on the Hill’s sincerity.”

Maria grasped her meaning. They were cornered by Wesley.

If the Hill could exert pressure on Wesley to return the garment department and offer an apology to Hailey, that would be ideal.

“I will speak with him personally,” Maria volunteered.

“I believe we should also inform the rest of the Hill. From what I know, Gary is preparing for a chess tournament, which will attract masters of the game from around the world.”

Hailey’s eyes lit up at the mention of the tournament.

Many corporations engaged in recreational activities and hosted competitions annually, with chess being one of the most prominent. Initially, these competitions were simply for sport, but over time, they evolved into key events where business magnates could collaborate.

While a chess tournament might not seem impactful, participating CEOs could reap substantial benefits and even boost their companies’ economies.

Previously, the chess tournaments were held abroad, but since Gary had won the championship in recent years, the current tournament was taking place in Geniston, with the Hill managing the entrance.

“Very well, we shall acquire VIP tickets to the tournament,” Hailey said.
